Santa Barbara Deaf Resources Team

The Santa Barbara District's approach to collaborative problem solving and counselor directed initiatives has also led to the development of the Deaf Resources Team. In their quarterly meetings, team members identify and prioritize needs within the district, share information and provide cross training to vocational counselors in rural areas, problem solve and develop creative solutions to meet the needs of deaf consumers particularly those in rural areas of the district where specialized services are not typically available. The efforts of the Deaf Services Team have resulted in the approval of two grants to build job placement services for the deaf and the development of a case service interpreting contract that guarantees a basic level of interpreting services will be available to deaf consumers throughout the District, particularly for critical needs such as job interviews.

Projects for 2010-2011

  1. Accessing Job Clubs / Job Search Skills in the District.

  2. Provide training on Deaf Culture to local Job Developers, Job Coaches, Vocational Counselors, and others. Tentative date for the "Introduction to Deaf Culture" December 7, 2010.
