Blind Advisory Committee (BAC)

Mandated by Section 19098.5 of the Welfare and Institutions Code, the Blind Advisory Committee (BAC) provides advice to the Department of Rehabilitation on services to individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

The BAC focuses its efforts on the following topics for persons who are blind or visually impaired:

  • increasing possibilities for competitive employment

  • expanding economic opportunities

  • enhancing independence and self-sufficiency

  • improving services

About the Blind Advisory Committee:

The Blind Advisory Committee (BAC) is established pursuant to Section 19098.5 of the Welfare and Institutions Code.

The Committee meets at least four times per year, and the public is encouraged to attend the meetings.

The Blind Advisory Committee (BAC) provides advice to the DOR on means to increase competitive employment, enlarge economic opportunities, enhance independence and self-sufficiency, and in methods of improving services for persons who are blind or visually impaired. The BAC represents the wide and diverse interests of blind and visually impaired rehabilitation consumer constituencies. BAC Members are either blind or visually impaired and/or have experience in providing services to individuals with vision loss.

The committee develops, in conjunction with stakeholders, an annual work plan to identify and address areas for improvement in services provided by the division to persons who are blind and visually impaired.

Composition:

The BAC shall consist of no more than thirteen members who represent the wide and diverse interests of blind and visually impaired rehabilitation consumer constituencies. The majority of the members shall be blind or visually impaired. Members of the committee who are not blind or visually impaired shall have experience in services to the blind. The DOR Director appoints representatives of specified entities to a four-year term. All qualified applicants are urged to apply.

The Department of Rehabilitation is seeking nominations to serve on the Blind Advisory Committee (BAC).

The BAC provides advice to the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) on means to increase competitive employment, enlarge economic opportunities, enhance independence and self-sufficiency, and in methods of improving services for persons who are blind or visually impaired.

There are five (5) BAC Member vacancies. The BAC is currently recruiting to fill the following membership categories:

  • 1 Representative of the California Council of the Blind

  • 1 Member with experience in the education of blind and visually impaired youth

  • 1 Service Provider for the blind and visually impaired

  • 2 Members at Large
